Movie of the Week - Anna Karenina

We have been curious about Joe Wright's adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's admired novel for months before it was released and finally saw it this week. The movie is mostly set in a theater and the change of theatrical sets and other unusual effects make it just gorgeous. It was a really good depiction of 19th century Russian society with their values and traditions, particularly aristocrats with their huge castle-like houses, fashion and the use of French as the demonstration of their sophistication.

Our favorite scene was Karenina/Vronsky dance which was simply breathtaking and radiated their passion and strong attraction. Vronsky (Aaron-Taylor Johnson) was insanely handsome while Karenin (Anna's husband) was opposite of sexiness. It was really hard to notice Jude Law's good looks in his costume.

Wright and Keira Knightley have previously worked on screen versions of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. We love Keira Knightley in most of her movies and think she's an incredible actress but we couldn't stop thinking about other actresses who could have nailed the role. Knightley is gorgeous but haiving read the book, she's just not Anna for us. Bernard Rose's version of Anna Karenina stars Sophie Marceau which in our opinion was perfect for the role.

The costumes were designed by Jacqueline Durran who added a lot of 1950s details on Anna's dresses. He said their aim was to  make audience recognize that this wasn't an authentic period piece. Anna also wears Chanel jewelry throughout the film.
The most memorable fashion moment is when Karenina is wearing a gorgeous black dress while the rest of the aristocrats are in pastel colors. She's stunning.  Durran said that he tried to frame Anna's beauty while creating his version of the most famous dress in literature.

Style Icon: Zooey Deschanel

Zooey is one of my favorite people in the world. Everyone who doesn't love Zooey is probably insane and needs to be checked. She's so talented it's ridiculous: she stars in some of my favorite movies, plays 'adorkable' Jess in New Girl, she was even nominated for Golden Globe award, she's a part of indie duo She & Him, almost every song is written by her and I swear her voice is the sweetest thing you'll ever hear. Zooey is also a co-founder of HelloGiggles which is my  favorite site for women. It isn't superficial and targets smart and  interesting women of all ages who have more concerns than looking skinny or making their boyfriend happy. Oh and she's friends with Joseph Gordon Levitt.
Apart from everything I've just said, Zooey is also an absolute style icon! Her style is cute, feminine, quirky and matches perfectly with her eccentric personality. Beautiful dresses, bright colored coats, tights and cute shoes - she can pull everything off and doesn't need to show a lot of skin to look sexy.
I found the best site ever yesterday. It has all of the Zooey's outfits from street style to New Girl and has links to online shops where you can buy either exact same things or more affordable versions of what she wears.

January Favorites

Movie - Django

We loved it. Is there anyone who doesn't love watching Tarantino messing with history?
The cast was amazing. Christoph Waltz is our absolute favorite and we think he deserves an Oscar for his performance. The soundtracks were awesome everything from Johnny Cash to Tupac.

Band - The Cure

I rediscovered The Cure this month and have been listening non-stop to their 1982 album Pornography which is by the way number 6 on NME's "50 Darkest Albums Ever" list.

Model - Cara Delevingne

She's gorgeous, stylish and has a goofy personality. Can she possibly be more awesome?

Celebrity - Michelle Dockery

We love Downtown Abbey even though we were disappointed by way too much tragedy. Michelle Dockery is an amazing actress with an amazing style.

Show - Daria

Daria is MTV show from 90s and this photo pretty much explains why I love it so much. We'll have an exclusive Daria post soon.

Book - Unbearable Lightness of Being

Some of our favorite quotes:

“for there is nothing heavier than compassion. Not even one's own pain weighs so heavy as the pain one feels with someone, for someone, a pain intensified by the imagination and prolonged by a hundred echoes.”

"A person who longs to leave the place where he lives is an unhappy person."

“The brain appears to possess a special area which we might call poetic memory and which records everything that charms or touches us, that makes our lives beautiful ... Love begins with a metaphor. Which is to say, love begins at the point when a woman enters her first word into our poetic memory.”
